Sorry for the delay...... for some reason I've had lots of issues this week, including losing the charger to my camera at least 4 times!!
First and most importantly are your tools and, or equipment. I like to shop around for the best prices when it comes to mixing bowls, measuring cups and, other odd assortments. If you already have them, that's great, but if you're planning to keep making bath fizzies and, or soap products, you should have separate tools for your bakeware and, your "soapware".
Here are some important notes before I show you the equipment. When using F/O (fragrance oil) remember you must use body safe fragrance oil.. most companies will tell you that the F/O is body safe.. or even a list of maximum usage in products.. for example this is one F/O I will use in this recipe. Fresh Peach F/O (fragrance oil)
Ok.. let's continue!
So let's get started!!

This is the front view of the items you will need to make bath fizzies. From left to right you have; Gloves: I try to stick to vinyl, since some people may be allergic to latex.
Baking soda, citric acid, mondo stainless steel molds, colorant, mica, fragrance, witch hazel, 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol, measuring cups. You'll be able to see more in the next picture.
In this picture you can clearly see the items I listed above and, also the sifter, mixing bowl and, spatula.
Now you will need
- 1 cup Citric Acid
- 2 cups Baking Soda
- 3 Tablespoons Kaolin Clay
- 18 mL (milliliter) Fragrance Oil or, Essential Oil
- Colorant
- Witch Hazel or 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol in a spray bottle
- Soap molds or, stainless steel mondo molds
2 cups Baking soda, which I bought at the grocery store.
The ratio for this to work needs to be 1:2.. the way I remember this is 1C2B.. it MUST be 1part citric acid to 2 parts baking soda... So whatever recipe you're going to try just remember 1C2B...
Next is your choice of colorant. Here I have colors that I bought from my local arts & craft store. They will cause the fizzing reaction in your bath fizzies to go off.. Brambleberry does have a line of colorant that does not let this happen but, I've learned that it's ok if they do go off. Just try to color and mix really fast so that you still have a viable product at the end.
This is colorant I bought from Naturesgardencandles.com They were made for cold process soap but, I've learned I can use them in bath fizzies and, when I make my SmellyJelly Air Fresheners. It's important not to over color your bath fizzies.. it will turn your bath water that particular color if you do. Also do not use colorants that stain.. such as food colorant. these will not only turn your water but will stain your skin!! You will see that my fizzies are blue and peach, but they are far from over colored.. my bath water only became cloudy because of the amount of powder in the fizzies... no color what so ever!!
Add 18ml of Fragrance Oil.. this is 1 full tablespoon (15ml) and then a dropper more. (3ml) now.. you can buy Droppers at brambleberry.com
Mix your powdered ingredients in a large enough bowl. I have a set of 4 with the largest holding 4 quarts. Add your fragrance oil and, mix again. Now add your color and mix fast. You will see darker spots in the mix, this is because the colorant started the fizzing..
I have a sifter, again bought at the grocery store... a decent sized one to rest on my bowl. Use this to sift the powder mix and, to get rid of any clumps that will not break down.
Now it's time for your Witch Hazel or, 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol. While witch hazel is a natural astringent.. I can't take the smell of it. so I tend to use Rubbing Alcohol. I bought both and CVS.. you can buy them wherever you find them. I also purchased two cheap spray bottles to put each in. On the left in the green bottle is my Rubbing Alcohol, on the right in the blue clear is my Witch Hazel.. you really don't need to be specific on which you choose, it's up to your nose and preference I guess.
You're going to spray and mix, repeat. Until, when you try to make a ball with the mix it stays together like so.
Now of course that isn't peach.. this is blueberry.. same steps. I wanted to make a dual fizzie so, I made two sets of mix for each fragrance. Colored accordingly. Next take your Mondo molds, which you can see in the corner and, stuff.. literally stuff the mold with as much mix as you can, do NOT level it off or anything, you will need it to be overstuffed for the next part. Do this to both sides of the mold. Of course since I'm making dual fizzies, I stuffed once side with Peach and, the other with Blueberry. Now you're going to take your two halves and push them together, do this over one of the bowls so, that all of the excess mix can fall out.. try to press the 2 halves together equally twisting and pushing. Once the two halves meet, twist the top half off. set the rest of the fizzie on a flat surface for about 10 minutes. Continue making as many as you can. I have 4 pieces so I can generally make 3 before I have to wait.
You can either cover the rest of your mix tightly with plastic wrap, that Witch Hazel or, Rubbing Alcohol with evaporate!! Or you can get creative and use your soap molds.. I stuffed as much mix as I can into this basic soap mold until it was fully flush with the edge of the mold.
Let these sit aside for 10 minutes as well. Now after 10 minutes its time to unmold your mondo bath fizzies. Hold the unmolded part in your hand. Tap on the mold with your fingers or, knuckles. I prefer my knuckles.. You sort of hear a hollow sound after a few taps. Even if you don't hear it.. after a few taps, squeeze the mold and twist off. Now set aside and let dry for 4 to 8 hours before packaging or using. With the soap molds flip over slowly, tap the back of the molds and, they should pop out. If not press gently in the center of the molds, they should release. Here are your finished products...ENJOY!!
It's funny because it looks like you're going to make some sick bomb or something. It is interesting to actually see it and get an idea of the process. You would explain it but I really had no clue, because I needed pictures to understand.
